The Department of Commerce, established in 1959, is one of the prominent departments of the institution, offering both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. The department currently offers B.Com (Computer Applications) (started in 1998), B.Com (Business Analytics) (started in 2021), and M.Com (started in 2012). Under the leadership of Dr. J. Nagaraju, Associate Professor and Head of the Department, the department strives to provide quality commerce education with a focus on professional competence, ethical values, and industry relevance.
The department is supported by a dedicated faculty team comprising experienced Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, and Lecturers with specializations in Finance and related areas. Faculty members actively engage in research, publications in national journals, seminars, workshops, refresher courses, and faculty development programmes. Several faculty members have completed Refresher Courses and Faculty Induction Programmes conducted by UGC and other reputed institutions.
Academically, the department maintains strong student strength across UG and PG programmes, with consistent pass percentages, particularly outstanding results in M.Com (achieving up to 100% pass percentage in recent years). The department also promotes curriculum enrichment through certificate courses such as Tally Prime and Tally ERP 9 training, including collaboration with TASK.
Infrastructure facilities include 10 classrooms (Rooms 301–310), a departmental library with 431 books, and ICT-enabled teaching with projector facilities. The department regularly conducts awareness programmes, extension lectures on research methodology, intellectual property rights, consumer rights, and job opportunities in IT and commerce-related sectors.
With future plans including entrepreneurship development training, state-level seminars, competitive exam coaching, student seminars, consumer awareness programmes, and educational field trips, the Department of Commerce continues to work towards academic excellence and holistic student development.
