The Department of Physics at Nagarjuna Government College (A), Nalgonda, has been functioning since the inception of the college in July 1956. In the initial years, the department offered B.Sc.courseswithcombinationssuchasMPCandMPG in Telugu and English medium,eachwithasanctionedstrength of 30 students. The department was fortunate enough to have Dr.J.C.Kameswar Rao, ,D.Sc in Physics as the founder principal of the college in shaping the department as full-fledged and well equipped department. In the initial stages Mr.D.Natesan who worked as the head of the department contributed very much for the development of the department.His successor Mr.S.Vishwanadam who became the Joint Director of Higher Education contributed a lot for the development of the department. For the last 70 years many distinguished academicians worked in this department.
Over the years, the department has grown steadily in terms of student strength, academic activities, and infrastructure. At present, the department offers several combinations including MPCs, MPC, MPG, and MPS.
