Brief History

Nagarjuna Government College, Nalgonda, traces its origin to the year 1956, when a group of enlightened and committed educationists came together under the banner of the Nagarjuna College Samithi to deliberate on the status of higher education in Nalgonda district. Deeply concerned about the limited access to collegiate education for rural, poor, and socially backward sections, these visionaries resolved to establish an institution that would bring quality higher education within the reach of the underserved. Their aspirations materialized with the founding of Nagarjuna College in July 1956, marking the beginning of a transformative educational journey in the region.

The college commenced its academic activities with just 60 students enrolled in pre-university courses. Demonstrating remarkable progress within a short span, the institution expanded in the very next academic year (1957–58) by introducing undergraduate programmes in Arts, Sciences, and Commerce, emerging as a pioneering centre of higher learning in the district.

Recognizing its growing significance, the Government of Andhra Pradesh (undivided) took over the institution in October 1958. This milestone proved to be a catalyst in the college’s development, enabling systematic expansion in academic programmes, infrastructure, and student strength. The college was granted recognition under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956, in 1972, making it eligible for financial assistance from the University Grants Commission. Since then, the institution has consistently strengthened its academic profile and now stands as one of the leading government colleges in Telangana, serving the educational needs of this historically backward district. During the academic year 2021–22, the college had 4,469 students on its rolls.

The institution’s commitment to quality has been recognized through multiple accreditation milestones. It was accredited by NAAC with a B++ Grade in 2004, conferred Autonomous Status by the UGC in 2007, and subsequently secured NAAC ‘A’ Grade accreditation in 2012. In its 3rd Cycle of NAAC accreditation in 2021, the college was awarded a ‘B’ Grade, reaffirming its sustained efforts toward quality enhancement in higher education. Over the decades, the institution has celebrated significant milestones, including its Golden Jubilee in 2006 and Diamond Jubilee in 2016, and it looks forward to commemorating its Platinum Jubilee in 2026.

Today, Nagarjuna Government College stands as a forerunner in higher education in this region of Telangana. Rooted in its founding vision yet responsive to contemporary educational demands, the institution continues to strive for academic excellence and aspires to be recognized among the finest institutions of higher education by national and state-level academic bodies.
